Many of us wait until late summer or early fall to take our vacation. While each trip can be different in many ways, there usually is at least one constant. It seems like there will always be someone at some point during the trip that will ask the infamous question Are we there yet? If your vehicle has not been properly maintained it could be asking you that same question. One of the leading causes of mechanical breakdowns on our highways is overheating. This, along with low antifreeze/coolant, worn or loose drive belts, and defective cooling system hoses, is easy to detect, but can cause a lot of trouble if not repaired. The following quick pre-trip checklist can help you keep your vehicle off the side of the road:

  • Check all fluids - There are several fluids, in addition to antifreeze, that require attention, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission fluids, and windshield washer solvent.

  • Check hoses and belts - A belt that fails can affect the electrical system, air conditioning and power steering, as well as the cooling system. Cooling system hoses may be deteriorating from within, so old hoses and clamps in marginal condition might need to be replaced.

  • Check the tires - Check tire inflation and inspect the tread for uneven wear, indicating the need for wheel alignment. Also look for bulges and bald spots.

While checkups cannot guarantee a vehicle's performance, they will help reduce the chances of costly and possibly dangerous road trouble. They also allow you to have the repairs made locally, by a technician who knows your vehicle. But more importantly, they provide peace of mind while traveling.
